Tradename:
Sulfozinc
Composition:
Each 5 ml of syrup contains:
Zinc sulfate monohydrate – 54.85mg (equivalent to 20mg zinc).
Auxiliary components: methyl hydroxybenzoate, propyl hydroxybenzoate, liquid glucose, sorbitol 70%, strawberry essence, purified water.
Properties:
Zinc is an integral component of many metalloenzymes in the body; it is involved in the synthesis and stabilization of proteins, DNA, RNA, and protects against damage by free radicals. Promotes wound healing and helps maintain normal growth rates, normal skin hydration and taste and smell. Zinc deficiency leads to stunted growth and defects in rapidly dividing tissues such as skin and intestinal mucosa. Zinc deficiency in humans alters several aspects of immune function. Immune defects associated with zinc deficiency include dysfunction of lymphocy natural killer cells, zinc improves the absorp of water and electrolytes, and zinc supplementation prevents subsequent
episodes of diarrhea. WHO recommends daily zinc supplementation for children with acute diarrhea, to reduce the severity of the episode and prevent further manifestations in the next 2 to 3 months. Zinc improves the regeneration of the intestinal epithelium, increases the level of enzymes and enhances the immune response, which promotes better cleansing of pathogenic microorganisms.
Indications:
Acute and chronic diarrhea. Zinc deficiency, respiratory tract infections, runny nose, Wilson’s disease, acne vulgaris, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and immunodeficiency conditions, including the control of recurrent infections, especially in the case of Down syndrome. As an adjunct to antimicrobials for bloody diarrhea.
Mode of application:
Should be taken with or after meals to avoid gastrointestinal disturbances.
For diarrhea: – Children under 6 months: 10 of elemental zinc (2.5 ml) per day. Children over 6 months of age: 20 mg of elemental zinc (5 ml) daily. Treatment should be continued for 10-14 days to prevent recurrence of diarrhea.
To replenish zinc deficiency and other indications: – For children under 10 kg: 22.5 mg of elemental zinc (5.6 ml) daily in divided doses. Children from 10 to 30 kg: 22.5 mg of elemental zinc (5.6 ml) 1-3 times a day. Adults and children 30 kg or more: 45 mg of elemental zinc (11.2 ml) 1-3 times a day or as directed by a physician.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to zinc salts or any component of zinc supplements.
Side effects: rarely gastrointestinal disturbances (eg, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, stomach irritation), which can be reduced by taking the drug with or after meals.
Precautions:
Long-term use can lead to copper deficiency. As with all medications containing sorbitol, it is not recommended for diabetic patients.
Pregnancy and lactation: Should be used
during pregnancy and lactation only as
directed by a physician.
