Composition:
Each capsule contains:
Esomeprazole – 20 mg.
Properties:
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), the S-isomer of omeprazole, which reduces gastric acid secretion by specifically inhibiting the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme in the gastric parietal cells.
Indications:
Treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Short-term therapy (4 to 8 weeks) of erosive esophagitis and GERD-related symptoms (e.g., heartburn)
Maintenance therapy for symptom relief and healing of erosive esophagitis for no longer than 6 months
Treatment of patients with Helicobacter pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Patients requiring long-term NSAID therapy – for healing gastric ulcers and prevention of gastric and duodenal ulcers associated with NSAID use.
Dosage and Administration:
For adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older:
Capsules should be swallowed whole with half a glass of water, with or without food.
For patients who are unable to swallow capsules, they may be opened and the contents mixed in water for administration.
GERD – Treatment:
40 mg once daily for 4 weeks.
Prevention of relapse, symptomatic treatment of GERD:
20 mg once daily.
Maintenance therapy:
20 mg once daily.
In combination with antibiotics for eradication of H. pylori and prevention of ulcer recurrence:
20 mg esomeprazole with 1 g amoxicillin and 500 mg clarithromycin, twice daily for 7 days.
Healing of NSAID-associated gastric ulcers:
20 mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks.
Prevention of NSAID-associated gastric and duodenal ulcers:
20 mg once daily.
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome:
Initial dose of 40 mg twice daily. Dose should be individually adjusted and treatment continued as clinically indicated.
Most patients can be managed with 80–160 mg per day in two divided doses.
Patients with severe hepatic impairment:
Maximum recommended dose: 20 mg of esomeprazole daily.
Contraindications:
Children under 12 years of age
Hypersensitivity to esomeprazole or any component of the formulation
Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Precautions:
Long-term use of PPIs, especially at high doses, may be associated with an increased risk of hip, wrist, or spine fractures due to osteoporosis.
Adverse Reactions:
Headache, dizziness, diarrhea, flatulence, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, skin reactions (flushing, itching), tingling/burning/numbness, drowsiness, dry mouth, swelling of hands or feet, increased liver enzymes, blurred vision, depression, irritability, confusion, taste disturbances, hair loss, joint and muscle pain, excessive sweating.
Storage:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C, in the original packaging, in a dry place out of the reach of children.
Packaging:
Cardboard box contains 2 blisters of 7 capsules each and a paper insert.
