Composition:

Each teaspoonful (5 ml) contains:

Lactulose 3.35 gm (67%)

Properties:

Active ingredient lactulose is broken down in the intestines into compounds that draw water from the body into the intestines to soften the stool and facilitate its passage.

It also helps in removing toxins accumulated in the body in cases of hepatic encephalopathy in which the liver is not functioning properly.

Indication:

  • constipation
  • treatment of chronic constipation in hemorrhoids
  • treatment of constipation after gastrointestinal surgeries
  • hepatic encephalopathy

Dosage and administration:  

For the treatment of adult constipation: 3 teaspoonfuls (15 ml) 2-3 times daily, increasing to 60 milliliters if necessary.

Treating constipation in children over 6 years old: 2 teaspoons twice daily.

Treating constipation in children (1-6 years): 1 teaspoon (5 ml) twice daily.

Treatment of constipation in infants: half a teaspoon twice a day.

For the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy in adults: 30-50 ml 3 times daily.

The medicine can be mixed with water or juice to improve its taste.

You should drink plenty of water, 6 to 8 glasses of fluids during the day, during treatment.

Side effects:

  • frequent farting
  • irregular heart rate
  • feeling of fullness, bloating
  • gastrointestinal disorders
  • muscle spasms or weakness

  • nausea and vomiting
  • discomfort

Contraindications:

  • allergy to any of the ingredients
  • diabetes (the medicine may affect blood sugar levels)
  • lactose intolerance (galactosemia; a rare health problem in which the body cannot process the sugar galactose)

Pregnancy and lactation:

Sedalac syrup can be used to treat constipation in pregnant and breastfeeding women because lactulose is generally safe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

Warnings and precautions:

Before taking lactulose:

-tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to lactulose or any other drugs;

-tell your doctor or pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially antacids, antibiotics including neomycin or other laxatives;

-tell your doctor if you have diabetes or require a low-lactose diet;

-tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking lactulose, call your doctor;

-if you are having surgery or tests on your colon or rectum, tell the doctor that you are taking lactulose.

Storage:

Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C.
