Properties:
Carbocisteine (S-carboxymethyl L-cysteine) affects the nature and amount of mucus glycoprotein that is secreted by the respiratory tract. It is known that an increase in the acid: neutral glycoprotein ratio in mucus and the conversion of serous cells to mucus cells are the primary response to irritation and are usually accompanied by hypersecretion. Administration of carbocisteine to animals exposed to irritants indicates that the secreted glycoprotein remains normal; introduction after exposure indicates that the return to normal is accelerated. Human studies have shown that carbocisteine reduces goblet cell hyperplasia. Consequently, carbocisteine plays a role in the treatment of disorders characterized by abnormal mucus.
