Composition:

Sulfamethoxazole: 200 mg.
Trimethoprim: 40 mg (per 5 ml).

Product Description: 

Co-Trimoxazole is a synergistic combination of a sulfonamide (sulfamethoxazole) and a dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor (trimethoprim).
Together, they block sequential steps in bacterial folate synthesis, providing broad antibacterial and antiprotozoal activity.

Indications for Use:

• Respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia).
  
• Urinary tract infections.
  
• Gastrointestinal infections (shigellosis, traveler’s diarrhea).
  
• Otitis media.
  
• Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP).

Method of Administration and Dosage:

• Shake well before use.
  
• Administer orally, with or without food.
  
• Typical pediatric dose: 40 mg/kg sulfamethoxazole + 8 mg/kg trimethoprim daily in two divided doses.
  
• Adult dose: 800 mg sulfamethoxazole + 160 mg trimethoprim every 12 hours.
  
• Duration: 5–14 days depending on infection type.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or trimethoprim.
Severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency.
Infants <2 months.

Precautions:

Monitor renal function and electrolytes in prolonged therapy.
Risk of Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.
Adjust dose in renal impairment.

Side Effects:

Common: nausea, vomiting, rash, headache.
Serious: hypersensitivity reactions, blood dyscrasias (agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia), hyperkalemia.

Pregnancy and Lactation:

Avoid in late pregnancy (risk of kernicterus in newborns).
Use only if benefits outweigh risks; consult a physician.

Keep out of reach of children.
