Mestinon 60 mg 150 dragees
Composition:
Active substance:
• Pyridostigmine bromide — 60 mg in one tablet
Pharmacological properties:
Pyridostigmine slows down the destruction of acetylcholine, enhancing and prolonging its effect on neuromuscular synapses. This leads to improved transmission of nerve impulses to muscles and increased muscle strength in patients with myasthenia.
Indications for use:
• Myasthenia gravis (an autoimmune disease causing muscle weakness)
• Prevention and treatment of postoperative bowel and bladder atony
• Sometimes used in case of overdose of non-depolarizing muscle relaxants
Method of administration and dosage:
Adults:
• Doses of 30 to 120 mg at intervals during the day when maximum potency is required (e.g. upon awakening and before meals). The usual duration of action of the dose is 3-4 hours during the day, but a longer effect (6 hours) is often achieved when the dose is taken before bedtime.
• The total daily dose is usually 5 to 20 tablets, but some patients may require higher doses, depending on the dose titration.
Children:
• Children under 6 years of age should be prescribed an initial dose of Mestinon - half a tablet (30 mg); Children aged 6 to 12 years - one tablet (60 mg). The dose should be increased gradually by 15-30 mg per day until maximum improvement is achieved. The total daily requirement is usually 30 to 360 mg.
Other indications (paralytic ileus, postoperative urinary retention)
Adults - The usual dose is 1 to 4 tablets (60-240 mg) per day.
