Properties:
The active ingredient of Bonapex 70 mg alendronate sodium dehydrate is a bisphosphonate that inhibits osteoclastic bone resorption with no direct effect on bone formation. Clinical studies have shown preferential localization of alendronate to sites of active resorption. The bone formed during treatment is of normal quality.
Indications:
Treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis and osteoporosis in men.
Dosage and administration:
The recommended dosage is one 70 mg tablet once weekly. To facilitate delivery to the stomach and reduce the potential for esophageal irritation patients must follow the following instructions:
– the tablet should be swallowed without chewing or sucking;
– swallow the tablet with the full glass of plain water only on an empty stomach;
– patients should not lay down at least 30 minutes after taking the tablets
Side effects:
Common: abdominal pain;
Rare: nausea, vomiting, a full or bloated feeling in the stomach, constipation, diarrhea, black or bloody stools, gas, headache, a changed sense of taste, and bone, muscle, or joint pain, itching or eye pain, or a rash that may be made worse
by sunlight, severe skin reactions, hives, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, which may cause trouble in breathing or swallowing.
-Irritation, inflammation or ulcers of the esophagus may occur, and may sometimes bleed, if patients do not drink a full glass of water with Fosamax or if they lie down in less than 30 minutes or before their first food of the day. Stop taking Fosamax and call your doctor right away if you get any of these signs of possible serious problems:
- Chest pain
- Heartburn
- Trouble or pain when swallowing
Contraindications:
- age less than 18 years
- certain problems with your esophagus;
- disability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes;
- low levels of calcium in your blood;
- severe kidney disease;
- pregnancy or nursing;
- allergy to any of the ingredients
Warnings and precautions:

- Medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
