Description:
Tadalafil is a reversible, selective inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). When sexual arousal causes local release of nitric oxide, inhibition of PDE5 by tadalafil results in increased concentrations of cGMP in the corpora cavernosa of the penis. This results in relaxation of the smooth muscles of the arteries and increased blood flow to the penile tissue, causing an erection. Tadalafil has no effect in the absence of sexual arousal.
