Composition:
Xylometazoline hydrochloride 1 mg/ml (0.1%).
Excipients:
Corn starch, magnesium stearate, stabilizers, and fillers.
Description:
Otrivin is a nasal decongestant (alpha-adrenergic agonist). It relieves nasal congestion by constricting blood vessels in the nasal mucosa, reduces swelling and hyperemia, decreases mucus secretion, and restores nasal breathing. Onset of action occurs within minutes and lasts up to 12 hours. Well tolerated by patients with sensitive nasal mucosa.
Indications:
Acute respiratory infections with rhinitis. Acute allergic rhinitis. Pollinosis. Sinusitis. Eustachitis. Otitis media (to reduce nasopharyngeal mucosal swelling). Preparation for diagnostic procedures (e.g., rhinoscopy).
Dosage:
Intranasal. Adults and children over 12 years: 2–3 drops in each nostril up to 3–4 times daily as needed. Last dose recommended before bedtime. Do not use continuously for more than 10 days to avoid rebound effect (rhinitis medicamentosa) and nasal mucosa atrophy.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to xylometazoline. Hypertension, tachycardia, severe atherosclerosis, glaucoma, atrophic or dry rhinitis, hyperthyroidism. History of pituitary surgery or interventions on meninges. Children under 12 years.
Use with caution:
Diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases (including ischemic heart disease, angina), prostatic hyperplasia, pheochromocytoma. Sensitivity to adrenergic agents.
Pregnancy and lactation:
Not recommended during pregnancy. During breastfeeding — only under medical supervision after risk-benefit assessment. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Adverse effects:
Common — nasal irritation, dryness, burning, sneezing, hypersecretion, headache, nausea.
Rare — insomnia, depression, palpitations, hypertension, vomiting.
Very rare — tachycardia, arrhythmia, vision disturbances, skin reactions, angioedema.
Long-term use may cause rhinitis medicamentosa.
Storage conditions:
Store below 30 °C, in a dry, protected place.
