Composition:
• Benztropine mesylate - 2 mg in each tablet
Pharmacological properties:
Benztropine has:
• Anticholinergic action - blocks M-cholinergic receptors
• Antihistamine action - weak
• Central action - helps restore the balance between dopamine and acetylcholine in the central nervous system
Effects:
• Reduces tremor and rigidity
• Reduces the risk of Parkinsonism caused by antipsychotics
• Alleviates movement disorders during neuroleptic therapy
Indications for use:
• Parkinson's disease (idiopathic, postencephalitic and atherosclerotic forms)
• Extrapyramidal disorders caused by neuroleptics (eg, dystonia, akathisia)
• Adjunctive therapy for some forms of drug-induced Parkinsonism
Method of administration and dosage:
• Adults:
• Usually start with 0.5–1 mg once a day
• Maintenance dose: 1–2 mg 2–3 times a day
• Maximum daily dose: up to 6 mg
