Form of Release: Cream

Acyclostad 5% Cream 10 g

Composition:

Each 1 g contains: Acyclovir 50 mg

Product Description:

  • Acyclostad is an antiviral medication, a synthetic analogue of the nucleoside thymidine, with highly selective activity against herpes viruses.
  • In virus‑infected cells, acyclovir is converted by viral thymidine kinase into mono-, di-, and triphosphate forms.
  • Acyclovir triphosphate is incorporated into the viral DNA chain and blocks its synthesis through competitive inhibition of viral DNA polymerase.
  • The drug selectively accumulates in cells affected by herpes viruses.
  • It is active against Herpes simplex types 1 and 2, Varicella zoster, and Epstein–Barr virus; moderately active against cytomegalovirus.
  • In herpes infections, it prevents the formation of new lesions, reduces the risk of cutaneous dissemination and visceral complications, accelerates crust formation, and decreases pain in the acute phase of herpes zoster.

Localized herpes zoster (adjunctive treatment).

Method of Administration and Dosage:

  • Effective for preventing recurrences of herpes labialis; treatment is more effective when started early (at the first signs of infection).
  • In immunocompromised patients (HIV/AIDS, post–bone marrow transplantation), systemic acyclovir should be used in addition to topical therapy.
  • To prevent autoinoculation to other skin areas, use finger cots or gloves.
  • Acyclovir does not prevent sexual transmission of herpes; sexual contact should be avoided during treatment, even in the absence of symptoms.
