Composition:
Each oral dispersible tablet contains Acyclovir 800 mg (active ingredient).
Product description:
Antiviral nucleoside analogue. Inhibits viral DNA polymerase, preventing replication of herpes viruses.
Oral dispersible tablet formulation allows easier administration, especially for patients with swallowing difficulties.
Indications for use:
Treatment of herpes zoster (shingles), varicella (chickenpox), and herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections (e.g., genital herpes), per clinical judgment and local labeling.
Method of administration and dosage:
Oral; take with water.
Typical adult regimen for herpes zoster: acyclovir 800 mg five times daily for ~7 days.
Dosing may differ for HSV/varicella and requires adjustment in renal impairment; follow doctor’s advice.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to acyclovir or valacyclovir; consider risks in severe renal impairment.
Precautions:
Ensure adequate hydration; reduce dose in renal impairment and older adults.
Monitor for neurotoxicity in high doses/renal dysfunction.
Use caution with concomitant nephrotoxic drugs.
Adverse reactions (side effects):
Common: headache, dizziness, diarrhea, abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea.
Less common: rash, pruritus, fatigue.
Rare/serious: renal dysfunction, neurotoxicity (confusion, tremor), hypersensitivity reactions.
Pregnancy and lactation:
Use only if potential benefit outweighs risk; acyclovir is excreted in breast milk-exercise caution during lactation.
