Composition:

Active ingredient: labetalol hydrochloride – 100 mg

Description:

Labipress contains labetalol, a combined alpha- and beta-adrenergic blocker used for the management of hypertension. It lowers blood pressure with minimal impact on cardiac output. It may be used alone or in combination with thiazide diuretics or other antihypertensive agents.

Indications for Use:

Treatment of hypertension, including severe forms

May be used as initial therapy or in combination with diuretics and/or other antihypertensive medications

Dosage and Method of Administration:

-Recommended starting dose: 100 mg twice daily after meals.

-Maintenance dose: 200–400 mg twice daily.

-Maximum daily dose: 1200 mg in two divided doses.

-Lower doses are recommended for elderly patients and those with hepatic impairment.

-Safety and efficacy in children (<18 years) have not been established.

Contraindications:

-Hypersensitivity to labetalol

-Sinus bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome

-Cardiogenic shock or states of hypoperfusion

-Uncontrolled congestive heart failure

-Second or third-degree AV block

-Asthma or history of obstructive lung disease

-Severe peripheral arterial circulatory disorders

Precautions:

-Do not discontinue abruptly in patients with angina (risk of myocardial infarction).

-May cause postural hypotension and syncope, especially if titration is too rapid.

-May mask symptoms of hypoglycemia.

-Use cautiously with verapamil or diltiazem (risk of additive cardiac effects).

-Risk of severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis; epinephrine may be less effective.

-Contains lactose (avoid in patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance).

-Ophthalmologic monitoring advised due to melanin binding.

Side Effects:

Most common: postural hypotension/dizziness (16.9%), fatigue (13.1%), headache (8%)

Others: nausea, vomiting, dyspnea, bradycardia, Raynaud's phenomenon

Serious: bronchospasm, jaundice

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Unknown if excreted in human milk—decision on breastfeeding discontinuation should be individualized.
